In 841, longships sailed up the Seine for the first time. This marks the beginning of Viking raids in Normandy. 70 years later, in 911, the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte was sealed. This put an end to several decades of violent turmoil and constituted the foundational act for the future Duchy of Normandy. Normandy, the “land of the men from the North,” was born.
